A LITTLE HISTORY OF the Public WOrks Department:

In the early days of the road department, the township stored the road equipment in an old tractor shed at the corner of Morgan Hill Rd and Texas Rd where the current elementary school is. When the land was purchased in the 1950’s to build a new consolidated elementary school to consolidate and replace all the one-room schoolhouses throughout the township. The township was then able to acquire the old one room Fairview Schoolhouse at the intersection of Diehl and Morgan Hill Rds. to be used for township meetings. The garage behind the schoolhouse was built a short time later to store the equipment for the road department and move it out of the tractor shed.

By the early 1990’s, after the township started to see a construction boom in the 70’s and 80’s and more roads and houses being built, it became obvious that we needed to expand. They decided to buy a piece of property next to 2300 Morgan Hill Road, known as the Heavner property at 195 Diehl Rd. They gave the owner life rights to the property, with the intent of eventually demolishing the house and expanding our operations there. Then around 2004 the township decided to move the whole operation to a more feasible location at which time they started to acquire a 12-acre piece of property next to the fire company at 2500 Morgan Hill Rd. The property was being proposed for a new subdivision, and the Township was able to purchase the property before the subdivision plans moved ahead. This property also connects to the 28-acre main office and municipal park property on Cider Press Rd.

In 2006, plans were drawn up for the new public works building to be built on the 12 acre parcel. Due to site distance issues for driveway access onto Morgan Hill Rd the Township was able to acquire an easement from the Williams Township Fire Co. #1 property. The bids went out for public bid in February 2007. In April of 2007 a bid for the new building was approved at a cost of $3.2 million. Construction started in the Fall of 2007 and continued through the early Spring of 2009 after delays in getting the proper environmental permits pushed the construction into the Winter months, which then lead to several weather delays. Construction was eventually completed on the new public works building in the Spring of 2009 at a cost of $3.4 million dollars.

The old public works building at 2300 Morgan Hill Road is now the township’s recycling center and material storage site.

The old schoolhouse (which is the last publicly owned school in Williams Township) is currently being refurbished to be used for storage and display of historic files and memorabilia of Williams Township.
