The emerald ash borer is an invasive beetle that has devastated ash tree populations across Pennsylvania, including here in Northampton County. First detected in the state in 2007, this beetle kills ash trees by tunneling under the bark and cutting off their water and nutrient flow—often killing the tree within a few years.

Signs of EAB infestation include: D-shaped holes in bark, S-shaped tunnels under bark, Canopy dieback, Sprouting from the trunk, and Increased woodpecker activity.

The PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources is managing the spread through tree removal, chemical treatments, and biological controls.

Homeowners are encouraged to inspect ash trees and consult a professional if EAB is suspected.
